Madcap Revamp

8/24/09 9:37 PM

Bored with the old, in with the new.
Dictionary madcap |ˈmadˌkap| adjective: amusingly eccentric : a surreal, madcap novel.
done or thought up without considering the consequences; crazy or reckless : some madcap money-making scheme.
noun: an eccentric person.
Thesaurus
madcap adjective 1 a madcap scheme reckless, rash, foolhardy, foolish, harebrained, wild, hasty, imprudent, ill-advised; informal crazy, crackpot, crack-brained. 2 a madcap comedy zany, eccentric, unconventional.
noun: she was a boisterous madcap eccentric, crank, madman/madwoman, maniac, lunatic; oddity, character; informal crackpot, oddball, weirdo, loony, nut, screwball, loon.
Madcap: fitting for me - yet also fitting for a 90's punk band from California and a Marvel villain, apparently.

Marvel Madcap has two super powers: 1. Fantastic rate of regeneration and recovery: he heals from any physical injury instantly, and even if he sustains enough damage to kill him (such as being flattened or having his neck snapped), or destroy him (such as being incinerated), he will immediately resurrect.  2. A specialized form of insanity-inducement that immediately affects those he makes eye contact with.

Reading List - Fall 2009

8/23/09 4:09 PM

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (Half way through, I love it so far! I just learned that Julia Roberts will star in the film adaptation - Perfect match!)
The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold (Started reading this last year... must finish before movie comes out this December!)
A Separate Peace by John Knowles (Stole from my grandparents basement bookshelf -aka. my heaven- and learned while reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, it is among the books that Charlie reads. And so I must as well, obviously.) The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky √ (DONE! Loved, loved, loved! We do accept the love we think we deserve.)

The New Rules of Marketing and PR by David Meerman Scott (Brushing up on my marketing knowledge. Half way through- interesting and practical.) The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (Another steal from my grandparents.)

After reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, like many I'm sure, I made a list of the books Charlie is assigned to read by Bill, his teacher. I would like to read/re-read these titles again, possibly when I have completed my fall list:
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee √
Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald √
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger √
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
On the Road by Jack Kerouac
Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs
Hamlet by William Shakespeare √
The Stranger by Albert Camus
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand
This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Kensington in the Summertime

8/21/09 10:05 AM

One of my favourite places in the summer - Kensington Market: where shoes fall from the sky and people boo you in the streets.
Sarah and I stopped at Back Alley Woodfire BBQ and Grill for lunch for a significantly filling/delish meal - Mediterranean salad for me and a cheesy calzone for her. Taste-buds satisfied!

Bull’s-eye: Rodarte for Target

8/19/09 10:53 AM

Traveling to the states is not exactly a monthly voyage I undergo – but I MUST plan a definite southern excursion come December 20, 2009. Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte are designing a 55-piece collection for Target (prices under $80, hell-o!) Images of a lace, vintage-inspired dress, complete with gray bows and another ‘60s inspired black cocktail dress were said to have briefly leaked online and described as “perfection.” Style.com posted a discussion fearing Rodarte’s quirkiness and near-couture level of craftsmanship might be watered down for the Target collaboration. I’m hoping they will mimic past pieces, especially at this lower price point, because what they have going on now – is insane. I love it.

Skeleton inspired: yes please!
I call it wearable art.
Dear Target: Please come to Canada. Thanks.

Vanity Fair Portraits at the ROM

Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008
Edward Steichen's 1928 glamour shoot on George Baher's yacht: From left, June Cox wearing unidentified fashion; E. Vogt wearing fashion by Chanel and a hat by Reboux; Lee Miller wearing a dress by Mae and Hattie Green and a scarf by Chanel; Hanna-Lee Sherman wearing unidentified fashion. (Gelatin silver print, Conde Nast Archive, New York)

I’ve marked my calendar for Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008, presented by the Institute of Contemporary Culture (ICC) at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) from September 26, 2009 to January 3, 2010. Showcasing 150 portraits, the exhibition covers both vintage, classic images from Vanity Fair’s early period - Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo - and modern photographs since the magazine’s re-launch in 1983 - Demi Moore and Tom Cruise. This will be the exhibitions first showing in Eastern North America – It has brought together record-breaking attendance in Europe. More Information: HERE!

Rest peacefully John Hughes

8/17/09 12:35 PM

My one regret attending high school - was that 1980s had long passed. In those interesting years of experimentation and self discovery, John Hughes films were my religion. Notably- somehow, despite Molly Ringwald’s incredibly whiney and annoying demeanour, I was inspired by her iconic characters created by Hughes. And so here is my top-five tribute to the great, late John Hughes (February 18, 1950 – August 6, 2009):

5. Some Kind of Wonderful
...

4. The Breakfast Club
...

3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
...

2. 16 Candles
...

1. Pretty In Pink
